Position Title: Tutor

Position Description: The Tutor for STARS-Student Support Service will assist STARS students in learning the material necessary to succeed in their academic courses. Tutors may work on an individual basis with a student, or in a small group of no more than 3. Tutors will work with each student a minimum of one hour per week.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Meet weekly with each assigned student for a minimum of 1 hour to review course materials, answer questions, and prepare them for examinations.
2. Complete Online Weekly Tutor Reports, including all time worked, all time missed, any changes in tutoring status, subjects covered, assignments given, and the students current grade in the course.
3. Assist students in tracking their grade in the course being tutored.
4. Report any problems or concerns to the Coordinators of the STARS Program.
5. Attend all monthly staff meetings and special training sessions.
6. Act as a mentor or role model for the students being tutored.

Applicant Qualifications: Applicants for this position must possess strong interpersonal skills, oral and written skills. Computer literacy is required for most tutoring assignments. Applicants must have taken the course in which they have tutored, and have earned a B or better in the course. Applicants must have attended NSU for a minimum of one semester before applying. Prior tutoring experience is preferred. All applicants must provide an academic reference from an instructor in the area they wish to tutor, and complete an interview with the Tutoring Coordinators before being hired. A copy of the student's academic transcript must also be attached to the Tutor Application (online System).
